In unp mutant embryos the segmentally repeated ganglionic branches stall and fail to penetrate the CNS and the segment-specific cerebral branch and associated cerebral anastomosis fail to form. Expression of unp in the founder cells for the cerebral branch within the first tracheal metamere is repressed in posterior segments by Ubx and other bithorax complex genes. This pattern of expression and homeotic gene regulation is reproduced by an unusual 2.6 kb cis-regulatory sequence located downstream of the unp transcription unit. Since the unp protein is localized to the nucleus of tracheal precursor cells as they migrate and extend, unp protein appears to play a regulatory role in neural branching of the tracheae, and the segment-specific aspects of these neural branching patterns appear to be generated by homeotic regulation of unp expression.</AbstractText>
<AuthorList CompleteYN="Y"><Author ValidYN="Y"><LastName>Chiang</LastName><ForeName>C</ForeName><Initials>C</Initials><AffiliationInfo><Affiliation>Howard Hughes Medical Institute, Department of Molecular Biology and Genetics, Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, Baltimore, MD 21205, USA.</Affiliation></AffiliationInfo></Author><Author ValidYN="Y"><LastName>Young</LastName><ForeName>K E</ForeName><Initials>KE</Initials></Author><Author ValidYN="Y"><LastName>Beachy</LastName><ForeName>P A</ForeName><Initials>PA</Initials></Author></AuthorList><Language>eng</Language><DataBankList CompleteYN="Y"><DataBank><DataBankName>GENBANK</DataBankName><AccessionNumberList><AccessionNumber>U35427</AccessionNumber></AccessionNumberList></DataBank></DataBankList><PublicationTypeList><PublicationType UI="D016428">Journal Article</PublicationType><PublicationType UI="D013485">Research Support, Non-U.S. Gov't</PublicationType></PublicationTypeList></Article><MedlineJournalInfo><Country>England</Country><MedlineTA>Development</MedlineTA><NlmUniqueID>8701744</NlmUniqueID><ISSNLinking>0950-1991</ISSNLinking></MedlineJournalInfo><ChemicalList><Chemical><RegistryNumber>0</RegistryNumber><NameOfSubstance UI="D017931">DNA Primers</NameOfSubstance></Chemical><Chemical><RegistryNumber>0</RegistryNumber><NameOfSubstance UI="D029721">Drosophila Proteins</NameOfSubstance></Chemical><Chemical><RegistryNumber>0</RegistryNumber><NameOfSubstance UI="D018398">Homeodomain Proteins</NameOfSubstance></Chemical><Chemical><RegistryNumber>0</RegistryNumber><NameOfSubstance UI="C098131">unpg protein, Drosophila</NameOfSubstance></Chemical></ChemicalList><CitationSubset>IM</CitationSubset><MeshHeadingList><MeshHeading><DescriptorName UI="D000595" MajorTopicYN="N">Amino Acid Sequence</DescriptorName></MeshHeading><MeshHeading><DescriptorName UI="D000818" MajorTopicYN="N">Animals</DescriptorName></MeshHeading><MeshHeading><DescriptorName UI="D001483" MajorTopicYN="N">Base Sequence</DescriptorName></MeshHeading><MeshHeading><DescriptorName UI="D002490" MajorTopicYN="N">Central Nervous System</DescriptorName><QualifierName UI="Q000196" MajorTopicYN="Y">embryology</QualifierName></MeshHeading><MeshHeading><DescriptorName UI="D017931" MajorTopicYN="N">DNA Primers</DescriptorName><QualifierName UI="Q000235" MajorTopicYN="N">genetics</QualifierName></MeshHeading><MeshHeading><DescriptorName UI="D004330" MajorTopicYN="N">Drosophila</DescriptorName><QualifierName UI="Q000196" MajorTopicYN="Y">embryology</QualifierName><QualifierName UI="Q000235" MajorTopicYN="Y">genetics</QualifierName></MeshHeading><MeshHeading><DescriptorName UI="D029721" MajorTopicYN="Y">Drosophila Proteins</DescriptorName></MeshHeading><MeshHeading><DescriptorName UI="D018507" MajorTopicYN="Y">Gene Expression Regulation, Developmental</DescriptorName></MeshHeading><MeshHeading><DescriptorName UI="D005801" MajorTopicYN="Y">Genes, Homeobox</DescriptorName></MeshHeading><MeshHeading><DescriptorName UI="D018398" MajorTopicYN="N">Homeodomain Proteins</DescriptorName><QualifierName UI="Q000235" MajorTopicYN="Y">genetics</QualifierName></MeshHeading><MeshHeading><DescriptorName UI="D017403" MajorTopicYN="N">In Situ Hybridization</DescriptorName></MeshHeading><MeshHeading><DescriptorName UI="D008969" MajorTopicYN="N">Molecular Sequence Data</DescriptorName></MeshHeading><MeshHeading><DescriptorName UI="D014132" MajorTopicYN="N">Trachea</DescriptorName><QualifierName UI="Q000196" MajorTopicYN="Y">embryology</QualifierName></MeshHeading></MeshHeadingList></MedlineCitation><PubmedData><History><PubMedPubDate PubStatus="pubmed"><Year>1995</Year><Month>11</Month><Day>1</Day></PubMedPubDate><PubMedPubDate PubStatus="medline"><Year>1995</Year><Month>11</Month><Day>1</Day><Hour>0</Hour><Minute>1</Minute></PubMedPubDate><PubMedPubDate PubStatus="entrez"><Year>1995</Year><Month>11</Month><Day>1</Day><Hour>0</Hour><Minute>0</Minute></PubMedPubDate></History><PublicationStatus>ppublish</PublicationStatus><ArticleIdList><ArticleId IdType="pubmed">8582298</ArticleId><ArticleId IdType="doi">10.1242/dev.121.11.3901</ArticleId></ArticleIdList></PubmedData></PubmedArticle></PubmedArticleSet>
