The diversity of PDZ binding specificities can be explained by variable amino acids lining the peptide-binding groove of the PDZ domain. Abundantly represented in Caenorhabditis elegans, Drosophila melanogaster, and mammalian genomes, PDZ domains are frequently found in multiple copies or are associated with other protein-binding motifs in multidomain scaffold proteins. PDZ-containing proteins are typically involved in the assembly of supramolecular complexes that perform localized signaling functions at particular subcellular locations. Organization around a PDZ-based scaffold allows the stable localization of interacting proteins and enhances the rate and fidelity of signal transduction within the complex. Some PDZ-containing proteins are more dynamically regulated in distribution and may also be involved in the trafficking of interacting proteins within the cell."]},"AuthorList":{"@attributes":{"CompleteYN":"Y"},"Author":[{"@attributes":{"ValidYN":"Y"},"LastName":"Sheng","ForeName":"M","Initials":"M","AffiliationInfo":[{"Affiliation":"Howard Hughes Medical Institute and Department of Neurobiology, Massachusetts General Hospital and Harvard Medical School, Boston, Massachusetts 02114, USA. sheng@helix.mgh.harvard.edu"}]},{"@attributes":{"ValidYN":"Y"},"LastName":"Sala","ForeName":"C","Initials":"C"}]},"Language":["eng"],"GrantList":{"@attributes":{"CompleteYN":"Y"},"Grant":[{"GrantID":"NS35050","Acronym":"NS","Agency":"NINDS NIH HHS","Country":"United States"}]},"PublicationTypeList":{"PublicationType":[{"@attributes":{"UI":"D016428"},"@text":"Journal Article"},{"@attributes":{"UI":"D013485"},"@text":"Research Support, Non-U.S. Gov't"},{"@attributes":{"UI":"D013487"},"@text":"Research Support, U.S. Gov't, P.H.S."},{"@attributes":{"UI":"D016454"},"@text":"Review"}]}},"MedlineJournalInfo":{"Country":"United States","MedlineTA":"Annu Rev Neurosci","NlmUniqueID":"7804039","ISSNLinking":"0147-006X"},"ChemicalList":{"Chemical":[{"RegistryNumber":"0","NameOfSubstance":{"@attributes":{"UI":"D009419"},"@text":"Nerve Tissue Proteins"}},{"RegistryNumber":"0","NameOfSubstance":{"@attributes":{"UI":"D010455"},"@text":"Peptides"}},{"RegistryNumber":"0","NameOfSubstance":{"@attributes":{"UI":"D011506"},"@text":"Proteins"}}]},"CitationSubset":["IM"],"MeshHeadingList":{"MeshHeading":[{"DescriptorName":{"@attributes":{"UI":"D000595","MajorTopicYN":"N"},"@text":"Amino Acid Sequence"}},{"DescriptorName":{"@attributes":{"UI":"D000818","MajorTopicYN":"N"},"@text":"Animals"}},{"DescriptorName":{"@attributes":{"UI":"D001665","MajorTopicYN":"N"},"@text":"Binding Sites"}},{"DescriptorName":{"@attributes":{"UI":"D006801","MajorTopicYN":"N"},"@text":"Humans"}},{"DescriptorName":{"@attributes":{"UI":"D009419","MajorTopicYN":"N"},"@text":"Nerve Tissue Proteins"},"QualifierName":[{"@attributes":{"UI":"Q000737","MajorTopicYN":"Y"},"@text":"chemistry"},{"@attributes":{"UI":"Q000378","MajorTopicYN":"Y"},"@text":"metabolism"}]},{"DescriptorName":{"@attributes":{"UI":"D010455","MajorTopicYN":"N"},"@text":"Peptides"},"QualifierName":[{"@attributes":{"UI":"Q000737","MajorTopicYN":"N"},"@text":"chemistry"},{"@attributes":{"UI":"Q000378","MajorTopicYN":"N"},"@text":"metabolism"}]},{"DescriptorName":{"@attributes":{"UI":"D011506","MajorTopicYN":"N"},"@text":"Proteins"},"QualifierName":[{"@attributes":{"UI":"Q000737","MajorTopicYN":"Y"},"@text":"chemistry"},{"@attributes":{"UI":"Q000378","MajorTopicYN":"Y"},"@text":"metabolism"}]}]},"NumberOfReferences":"144"},"PubmedData":{"History":{"PubMedPubDate":[{"@attributes":{"PubStatus":"pubmed"},"Year":"2001","Month":"4","Day":"3","Hour":"10","Minute":"0"},{"@attributes":{"PubStatus":"medline"},"Year":"2001","Month":"9","Day":"14","Hour":"10","Minute":"1"},{"@attributes":{"PubStatus":"entrez"},"Year":"2001","Month":"4","Day":"3","Hour":"10","Minute":"0"}]},"PublicationStatus":"ppublish","ArticleIdList":{"ArticleId":[{"@attributes":{"IdType":"pubmed"},"@text":"11283303"},{"@attributes":{"IdType":"doi"},"@text":"10.1146\/annurev.neuro.24.1.1"},{"@attributes":{"IdType":"pii"},"@text":"24\/1\/1"}]}}}}
