Furthermore, the presence of Nodal in the node is essential for its own expression in the L-LPM. Here, we have characterized the function of cerl-2, a novel Nodal antagonist, which displays a unique asymmetric expression on the right side of the mouse node. cerl-2 knockout mice display multiple laterality defects including randomization of the L\/R axis. These defects can be partially rescued by removing one nodal allele. Our results demonstrate that Cerl-2 plays a key role in restricting the Nodal signaling pathway toward the left side of the mouse embryo by preventing its activity in the right side."],"CopyrightInformation":"Copyright 2004 Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory Press"},"AuthorList":{"@attributes":{"CompleteYN":"Y"},"Author":[{"@attributes":{"ValidYN":"Y"},"LastName":"Marques","ForeName":"Sara","Initials":"S","AffiliationInfo":[{"Affiliation":"Instituto Gulbenkian de Ci\u00eancia, 2781-901 Oeiras, Portugal."}]},{"@attributes":{"ValidYN":"Y"},"LastName":"Borges","ForeName":"Ana Cristina","Initials":"AC"},{"@attributes":{"ValidYN":"Y"},"LastName":"Silva","ForeName":"Ana Cristina","Initials":"AC"},{"@attributes":{"ValidYN":"Y"},"LastName":"Freitas","ForeName":"Sandra","Initials":"S"},{"@attributes":{"ValidYN":"Y"},"LastName":"Cordenonsi","ForeName":"Michelangelo","Initials":"M"},{"@attributes":{"ValidYN":"Y"},"LastName":"Belo","ForeName":"Jos\u00e9 Ant\u00f3nio","Initials":"JA"}]},"Language":["eng"],"PublicationTypeList":{"PublicationType":[{"@attributes":{"UI":"D016428"},"@text":"Journal Article"},{"@attributes":{"UI":"D013485"},"@text":"Research Support, Non-U.S. Gov't"}]}},"MedlineJournalInfo":{"Country":"United States","MedlineTA":"Genes Dev","NlmUniqueID":"8711660","ISSNLinking":"0890-9369"},"ChemicalList":{"Chemical":[{"RegistryNumber":"0","NameOfSubstance":{"@attributes":{"UI":"D017931"},"@text":"DNA Primers"}},{"RegistryNumber":"0","NameOfSubstance":{"@attributes":{"UI":"D055457"},"@text":"Nodal Protein"}},{"RegistryNumber":"0","NameOfSubstance":{"@attributes":{"UI":"C526008"},"@text":"Nodal protein, mouse"}},{"RegistryNumber":"0","NameOfSubstance":{"@attributes":{"UI":"D016212"},"@text":"Transforming Growth Factor beta"}}]},"CitationSubset":["IM"],"MeshHeadingList":{"MeshHeading":[{"DescriptorName":{"@attributes":{"UI":"D000818","MajorTopicYN":"N"},"@text":"Animals"}},{"DescriptorName":{"@attributes":{"UI":"D001483","MajorTopicYN":"N"},"@text":"Base Sequence"}},{"DescriptorName":{"@attributes":{"UI":"D019521","MajorTopicYN":"N"},"@text":"Body Patterning"},"QualifierName":[{"@attributes":{"UI":"Q000502","MajorTopicYN":"Y"},"@text":"physiology"}]},{"DescriptorName":{"@attributes":{"UI":"D017931","MajorTopicYN":"N"},"@text":"DNA Primers"}},{"DescriptorName":{"@attributes":{"UI":"D051379","MajorTopicYN":"N"},"@text":"Mice"}},{"DescriptorName":{"@attributes":{"UI":"D018345","MajorTopicYN":"N"},"@text":"Mice, Knockout"}},{"DescriptorName":{"@attributes":{"UI":"D055457","MajorTopicYN":"N"},"@text":"Nodal Protein"}},{"DescriptorName":{"@attributes":{"UI":"D016212","MajorTopicYN":"N"},"@text":"Transforming Growth Factor beta"},"QualifierName":[{"@attributes":{"UI":"Q000037","MajorTopicYN":"Y"},"@text":"antagonists & inhibitors"}]}]}},"PubmedData":{"History":{"PubMedPubDate":[{"@attributes":{"PubStatus":"pubmed"},"Year":"2004","Month":"10","Day":"7","Hour":"9","Minute":"0"},{"@attributes":{"PubStatus":"medline"},"Year":"2004","Month":"11","Day":"13","Hour":"9","Minute":"0"},{"@attributes":{"PubStatus":"entrez"},"Year":"2004","Month":"10","Day":"7","Hour":"9","Minute":"0"},{"@attributes":{"PubStatus":"pmc-release"},"Year":"2005","Month":"4","Day":"1"}]},"PublicationStatus":"ppublish","ArticleIdList":{"ArticleId":[{"@attributes":{"IdType":"pubmed"},"@text":"15466485"},{"@attributes":{"IdType":"pmc"},"@text":"PMC522983"},{"@attributes":{"IdType":"doi"},"@text":"10.1101\/gad.306504"},{"@attributes":{"IdType":"pii"},"@text":"18\/19\/2342"}]},"ReferenceList":[{"Reference":[{"Citation":"Adachi H., Saijoh, Y., Mochida, K., Ohishi, S., Hashiguchi, H., Hirao, A., and Hamada, H. 1999.
