In the past century, brain and behavior lateralization was considered a human peculiarity associated with language and handedness. However, nowadays lateralization is known to occur among all vertebrates, from primates to fish. Fish, especially zebrafish (<i>Danio rerio<\/i>), have emerged as a crucial model for exploring the evolution and mechanisms of brain asymmetry. This review summarizes recent advances in zebrafish research on brain lateralization, highlighting how genetic tools, imaging, and transgenic methods have been used to investigate left-right asymmetries and their impact on sensory, cognitive, and social behaviors including possible links to neurodevelopmental and neurodegenerative disorders."],"CopyrightInformation":"Copyright \u00a9 2025 Gobbo, Messina and Vallortigara."},"AuthorList":{"@attributes":{"CompleteYN":"Y"},"Author":[{"@attributes":{"ValidYN":"Y"},"LastName":"Gobbo","ForeName":"Alessandra","Initials":"A","AffiliationInfo":[{"Affiliation":"Centre for Mind\/Brain Sciences, University of Trento, Rovereto, Italy."}]},{"@attributes":{"ValidYN":"Y"},"LastName":"Messina","ForeName":"Andrea","Initials":"A","AffiliationInfo":[{"Affiliation":"Centre for Mind\/Brain Sciences, University of Trento, Rovereto, Italy."}]},{"@attributes":{"ValidYN":"Y"},"LastName":"Vallortigara","ForeName":"Giorgio","Initials":"G","AffiliationInfo":[{"Affiliation":"Centre for Mind\/Brain Sciences, University of Trento, Rovereto, Italy."}]}]},"Language":["eng"],"PublicationTypeList":{"PublicationType":[{"@attributes":{"UI":"D016428"},"@text":"Journal Article"},{"@attributes":{"UI":"D016454"},"@text":"Review"}]},"ArticleDate":[{"@attributes":{"DateType":"Electronic"},"Year":"2025","Month":"01","Day":"20"}]},"MedlineJournalInfo":{"Country":"Switzerland","MedlineTA":"Front Behav Neurosci","NlmUniqueID":"101477952","ISSNLinking":"1662-5153"},"KeywordList":[{"@attributes":{"Owner":"NOTNLM"},"Keyword":[{"@attributes":{"MajorTopicYN":"N"},"@text":"Danio rerio"},{"@attributes":{"MajorTopicYN":"N"},"@text":"behavioral lateralization"},{"@attributes":{"MajorTopicYN":"N"},"@text":"brain asymmetry"},{"@attributes":{"MajorTopicYN":"N"},"@text":"genetics"},{"@attributes":{"MajorTopicYN":"N"},"@text":"neurodevelomental disorders"}]}],"CoiStatement":"The authors declare that the research was conducted in the absence of any commercial or financial relationships that could be construed as a potential conflict of interest.
