位置と細胞構築

嗅周野は側頭葉にある皮質領域で、ブロッドマンの脳地図の35野と36野から構成される。霊長類では側頭葉前部の内側領域に位置する[1](図1)。35野は嗅脳溝の基底部(fundus)を、36野は嗅脳溝の外側部分を占める。嗅周野は内側と尾側において、内側側頭葉記憶システムの嗅内野(entorhinal cortex)と海馬傍皮質(parahippocampal cortex)と接し、外側において高次視覚領野(TE野)と接する。嗅周野は細胞構築学的には不等皮質(allocortex)と呼ばれる。35野は第4層を欠く無顆粒皮質(agranular cortex)であり、36野は第4層が薄く細胞密度が疎な異化粒皮質(dysgranular cortex)である。げっ歯類においても嗅周野は嗅脳溝に沿って位置するが、脳全体として見た位置は、霊長類と比べるとより外側部に位置する。また、げっ歯類では、嗅周野は尾側において、海馬傍皮質ではなく後嗅皮質と接する。後嗅皮質は霊長類の海馬傍皮質に対して細胞構築学的には異なるが、神経線維の結合様式は類似している。

結合

嗅周野は様々な高次感覚連合野から知覚情報を受け取るが、サルではTE野からの視覚入力が多くを占める[2]。TE野は物体情報を処理する視覚腹側路の最終段階にあたり、オブジェクト情報をコードする。嗅周野はTE野からの視覚入力以外に、海馬傍皮質内のTF野や上側頭溝(superior temporal sulcus)背側部といった複数の感覚モダリティーを処理する領域からの入力も受け取る。嗅周野が受け取った感覚情報が嗅内野を介して海馬に供給される一方で、海馬や嗅内野からの信号が逆行性に嗅周野に伝達される。高次感覚連合野や内側側頭葉領域以外では、嗅周野は眼窩前頭皮質(orbitofrontal cortex)や島皮質(insular cortex)、そして前帯状皮質(anterior cingulate cortex)といった情動や報酬に関する領域とも結合を持つ。また、サルでは感覚入力の大半は視覚連合野からの入力により占められるが、ラットでは嗅覚や体性感覚、聴覚といった視覚以外の入力の占める割合が高い。

機能

嗅周野は高次感覚連合野と内側側頭葉記憶システム[1]の中間点に位置する。この点は嗅周野の機能を考える上で重要であり、実際、嗅周野は内側側頭葉記憶システムの一員として記憶機能に従事するという説と、高次感覚連合野の最終段階としてより高次の知覚処理に機能する説[3]があり論争が続いている。知覚と記憶のどちらの側に位置づけるにしろ、嗅周野は宣言的記憶に関連する神経情報の主要経路の一つとして、主にオブジェクトに関する情報を高次感覚連合野から受け取り、嗅内野を介して海馬に供給するとともに、海馬からの出力を高次感覚連合野に伝達する。嗅周野は宣言的記憶に関わる情報の連絡路としてだけでなく、それ自身が連合記憶に関係し、異なるオブジェクト間での関連付けや[4]、オブジェクトと報酬情報の間の関連付け[5] [6]に寄与することが知られている。例えば2つの任意の視覚図形(例えば図形Aと図形B)をペアとして学習を行うと、対符号化細胞(pair-coding neuron) Braga, M., Nascimento, H., Nunes, A., Araújo, P., Pinto, R., Rodrigues, J., ..., & Rocha, A. と呼ばれる図形の組み合わせを表現する(図形Aと図形Bの両方に選択的な反応を示す)ニューロン群が嗅周野に多数出現する[4]。 嗅周野はある対象を知っているかどうかの判断にも寄与していると考えられている。これに関連して、嗅周野と海馬の間の機能分担に対する論争がある。ある対象を過去に経験したこととする再認(recognition)の過程にはには、その対象を知っている(気がする)場合(familiarity)と、その対象に関する具体的な情報を想起する場合(recollection)の2つの要素が重なり合っている。このとき、嗅周野は知っているかどうかに、海馬は想起にそれぞれ寄与するという説[7]</pubmed>と、両領域とも2つの要素のどちらにも寄与するという説[8]がある。
