 実行機能とは、複雑な課題の遂行に際し、課題ルールの維持やスイッチング、情報の更新などを行うことで、思考行動を制御する認知システム、あるいはそれら認知制御機能の総称である[1]。特に、新しい行動パタンの促進や、非慣習的な状況における行動の最適化に重要な役割を果たし、人間の目標志向的な行動を支えているとされ[2]、その神経基盤は一般に前頭前野 (prefrontal cortex) に存在すると考えられている[3][4]。代表的な行動課題には、ウィスコンシン・カード分類課題ストループ課題ストループ効果)などがある。

心理学モデル

 実行機能の研究は、主としてヒトワーキングメモリー研究においてなされており、幾つかのモデルが提唱されているが[1]、代表的なものは以下の2つである。

Baddeleyのモデル

 詳細は中央実行系を参照

 Baddeleyのワーキングメモリーモデルでは、実行機能は中央実行系 (central executive) と名付けられている[5]。中央実行系は、音声情報を保持する音韻ループ視空間情報を保持する視空間スケッチパッド長期記憶とのインタフェースとなるエピソディック・バッファという3つの記憶貯蔵庫を制御し、注意の焦点化と分割、スイッチング、長期記憶の活性化を行い、目標志向的行動を支えているとされる[6]

MiyakeとFriedmanのモデル

 Miyake et al (2000)[4] は、実行機能を測定する複数課題の成績データについて潜在変数分析 (latent variable analysis) を用い、実行機能が以下の3つの要素から構成されているとした。

 しかし、その後の研究[7] では、unity/diversity framework と呼ばれる、相関の高い実行機能要素の間にはそれを支える共通因子が存在するとともに (unity)、それらを分離する固有の因子が存在する (diversity) という考え[8] に基づき、さらなる詳細な検討が行われた。その結果、抑制は実行機能の潜在変数からは外れ、

の3つが実行機能の要素であるとした。

 common-EFとは、全ての課題に影響を与える一般的な実行機能であり、課題目標や課題関連情報の維持を行うことで、効果的に低次な情報処理をバイアスする実行機能である。彼らによれば、行動の抑制はcommon-EFの媒介によって出現するものであり、実行機能としての抑制は存在しないのだという[9]。これは、行動の抑制は必ずしも神経系における抑制によって達成されているのではなく、別の選択肢の促進によっても達成しうるものであり、前頭前野が課題目標の維持を行い課題関連情報の活性化を行う事で、間接的に、現在の課題には不必要な行動の相対的抑制が達成されている[10][11] という知見とも一致する。

心理学的知見

個人差

 ワーキングメモリー容量の高い個人は、注意制御・実行機能に優れており、課題目標の維持や競合解決においてワーキングメモリー容量の低い個人よりも高い成績を示す。高容量群は、ストループ課題において色あるいは文字からの干渉(ストループ効果)が低容量群よりも少なく[12]、また刺激出現位置とは反対方向に眼球運動せねばならないアンチ・サッカード課題 (antisaccade task) でも低容量群より成績が良い[13]。特に、後者の研究では、刺激出現位置にそのまま眼球運動すればよい順サッカード課題では、高・低両群に差がない事が示されており、自動的な注意補足に抗って反対方向に眼球運動するという、能動的な制御機能に個人差が存在し、それがワーキングメモリー容量と相関する事が示唆される。

 また、実行機能は注意欠陥・多動性障害との関連が指摘されている[14]。しかしながら、実行機能の弱さは注意欠陥・多動性障害の必要条件でも十分条件でもなく、ある程度の関連性が認められるに過ぎない[15]

発達

 実行機能は、児童期から思春期にかけて上昇し、初期成人期にピークを迎えた後、しばらくの平坦期(高原期)を経て、中年期に低下し始めるという二次関数(放物線)形の生涯発達パタンをとる[16]。特に、60歳以降の高齢期の減退は急激である[17]

 児童において顕著にみられる行動パタンは、前回あるいは慣習的に行っている行動への固執である。例えば、新しい課題ルールに切り替わった時に、何をすべきかについては正しく答えられるにも関わらず、正しい運動反応を行えず古い課題ルールに基づいて反応をしてしまうなどの行動が見られ[18]、顕在的なルール認識ではなく行動の抑制が上手く行えていない事が示唆される。児童期から思春期にかけての実行機能の発達においては、慣習的行動への固執の克服、刺激を目の前にした反応的な制御から刺激不在でも事前の準備を行う順向的制御へ、外的駆動型制御から内的駆動型制御へという3つの変化が現れ、より柔軟な行動を行えるようになる[19]

 近年、自己制御セルフコントロール)が上手く行えない児童は、上手く行える児童に比べ、30年後の健康状態が悪く、所得が少なく、また犯罪を行う傾向が高くなるという知見が示されるに至り[20]、実行機能のトレーニングを行う介入研究が盛んになりつつある[21]

遺伝と環境

 Friedman et al (2008)[7] は、双生児の縦断研究により、common-EFはその99%が遺伝によって担われていること(一卵性双生児でほぼ同じ)に加え、実行機能はある程度の発達的安定性があること(6年後の調査でも高い安定性が見られた)を示した。しかし、児童の実行機能を向上させようとする介入研究では、トレーニングによる実行機能の改善が報告されており[21]、研究間で必ずしも合致していない。これらの不一致は、Friedmanらの研究が対象としていた年齢が比較的高い(17歳から23歳間の縦断研究)一方、実行機能の介入研究では12歳以下の児童が対象になる事が多いという、年齢ならびに追跡期間の差異や、分析対象となる変数の違い(潜在変数か課題成績そのものか)等が原因と考えられる。しかしながら、幼児・児童期の自己制御能力や注意能力の差は、思春期においても保たれているという知見もあり[22][23]、実行機能にどの程度の柔軟性があり、トレーニングによって変化しうるのかは、今後の研究が待たれる。

神経基盤

 実行機能の神経機構を調べる研究は、行動上の概念を直接脳領域に位置づけるという形ではなく、他の高次認知研究からの知見を柔軟に吸収しつつ、独自に実行機能を脳と関連づけるという形での発展を見せている。しかし、現状においては前頭葉損傷が実行機能の減退を引き起こすという事以外には、研究者間での意見の一致はさほど多くなく、実行機能の下位要素あるいは前頭前野がどのように実行機能を担っているかについて様々な知見が混在している[24]

 ただし、大まかには腹外側前頭前野 (ventrolateral prefrontal cortex: VLPFC) は課題セットの切り替えと抑制[25][26]背外側前頭前野 (dorsolateral prefrontal cortex: DLPFC) は課題関連情報を維持し、計画を立てること[27]前帯状皮質 (anterior cingulate cortex: ACC) は、葛藤の検出とモニタリング[28][29][30]吻側前頭前野 (rostral prefrontal cortex: RPFC) は複数課題の遂行やエピソード記憶検索、他者の内的状態の推測に関与するとされる[31]

 しかし、特に前帯状皮質は議論の別れる領域であり、前帯状皮質損傷患者では葛藤の生じる課題においても課題成績に遜色がないとするデータもある他[32][33]、前帯状皮質は報酬と行為の連合を担っており、葛藤モニタリングはその下位機能に過ぎないとする説もある[34]。また、他の各領域の機能についても研究者間で意見の相違があり、今後の研究ではそれらの相違を克服するモデル構築が望まれる。

訳語の問題

 類似概念である中央実行系にも言えることであるが、「実行」という訳語がついているものの、この概念は必ずしも何らかの行為の実行をモデル化したものではなく、行為の実行に至るまでの高次認知過程の制御を主たる問題とするものである。「統御」あるいは「執行部」「管理職」など、高次からの情報管理や制御という意味を持つ他の訳語の方が、概念が指し示すニュアンスに近い。実際、中華人民共和国においては、執行機能という訳語があてられている。

 ただし、神経心理学やリハビリテーションの分野においては遂行機能とも訳され、前頭葉損傷による高次脳機能障害の説明概念として機能しており、目標設定や、行動の抑制・制御が行えるかといった行為能力に重きが置かれている[35]。しかし、遂行機能の検査として使われているものはウィスコンシン・カード分類課題など、実行機能測定にも使われる課題と同一であり、概念そのものに異同はない[36][37]
